[edit] Introduction

Aoi Umenokouji is a character in the Virtua Fighter series. Aoi first appeared in the third game, Virtua Fighter 3. She has since appeared in Virtua Fighter 4, Virtua Fighter 5, and the recent update to Virtua Fighter 5, Virtua Fighter 5 R.

She joined the tournament to test herself, like her childhood friend Akira. She enjoys Japanese paper fan dancing and her hobby is ikebana. After seeing Akira compete in previous tournaments, she resolves to enter it herself and prove her fighting ability. Two games later, she gains a rival (or possible secondary love interest) in Italian kickboxer Brad Burns.

Aoi is a practitioner of Aikijutsu. She is the eldest child of a dojo owner in Kyoto. Her father and Akira Yuki's father are old friends. As children, she and Akira would spar against each other. After seeing him compete in the tournament, she resolves to enter it herself and prove her fighting ability.

Realizing what a small world she was in after losing in the first round of the tournament, Aoi went back to training. Returning home, she tried hard not only to learn Aikido and Kobujutsu, but to also improve her knowledge in other martial arts. Her study has allowed her to more effectively counterattack and parry, as well as increase her repertoire. She is now anxious to enter the fourth tournament.

Aoi left the fourth tournament with only frustration and anger. She had to endure a slew of pick-up lines before her match, and the match itself was a complete loss. Her opponent's nimble footwork and powerful kicks were more than impressive, but his tendency to come on to any woman he saw only angered Aoi. Even after the tournament ended, Aoi thought about her opponent often. There had never been any fighters like that in the previous tournaments, and he had made a strong impression on her. Aoi found herself training harder because she wanted to show him a thing or two. Now that the invitiation to the Fifth World Fighting Tournament has arrived, Aoi can barely contain her desire to enter the tournament and see him again.
