Virtua Fighter 4 is the fourth game of the Virtua Fighter series. Four new characters were added to the existing roster, though two of them were introduced in Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution: Lei-Fei, a Chinese monk who is trained in the Shaolin-Ken style and Vanessa Lewis, a security guard of unknown origin who uses the Vale Tudo style. The two new characters who were introduced in the arcade update, Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution, are Brad Burns, an Italian Muay-Thai practitioner and Goh Hinogami, an enigmatic assassin who is employed by J6. The game was first released in 2001 for the arcade and later in 2002 for the Playstation 2.

[edit] Gameplay and Features

Virtua Fighter 4 became much more streamlined and user friendly than its predecessors, while expanding on old ideas and adding new techniques. The evasion system was revamped from Virtua Fighter 3, the evade button was removed, and evades were split into two types, successful and unsuccessful. When evades were not performed with the proper timing, they were unsuccessful leaving the fighter vulnerable. The evade + throw escape option select, which was an advanced technique discovered in Virtua Fighter 3, was expanded upon. Virtua Fighter 4 allowed the player to escape as many throws as they could, and lengthened the window for performing a successful throw escape during an [unsuccessful] evade. A new move type called a Sabaki was added; an attack that also doubles as a reversal versus one or more move types.

[edit] Quest

A new feature introduced in Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution is the Quest mode, where the player is supposedly travelling around different arcades and challenging real opponents. In reality, the player is actually fighting AI controlled opponents. This mode became very popular due to the customization feature, which allowed the players to buy items to equip on a character, as well as the ability to name a character. Sega took the top tournament arcade players from the arcade version and captured their style of play for the AI of a player's opponent for this mode.

[edit] Training

Another new mode introduced in Virtua Fighter 4 was the Training Mode. A few of the many sub-modes that this mode consisted of were complete character command list walkthroughs, individual recommended combos for each characters and tips on all the game's mechanics.
