Virtua Fighter 5 R is the updated version of Virtua Fighter 5. It was officially announced on February 14, 2008. It was released in arcades on July 24, 2008. It is similar to the update to Virtua Fighter 4, Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution. It is yet to be confirmed if this version will be ported to either the Playstation 3 or the Xbox 360. The R stands for revolution.

Virtua Fighter 5 R will feature a new character, Jean Kujo, a French karateka who has been brainwashed by J6 and ordered to kill Lion Rafale (his childhood friend), and a returning character, Taka-Arashi who is making his first appearance in a game since Virtua Fighter 3. He wasn't featured in subsequent games due to the technical implications of handling a considerably larger character. All of the stages have been remade and a number of new stages of also been added.

• The animation for "low punch" has been changed. It also seems to have a shorter reach and different frame stats.
• Throws appear to have 2 damage settings.
• No attacks can be executed through OM (DM + pgk).
• Rising attacks have been changed [1].
